The Liberty Hill Cemetery Association would like to extend our sincere gratitude to local Girl Scout, Dara Hawkins.
Dara chose the cemetery as her subject for her Gold Award Project which is the highest achievement offered by the Girl Scouts. Dara began work on her project in January of 2021 with efforts to improve signage throughout the cemetery. This included repairs, replacement and addition of badly needed street signs. Her next undertaking involved the complete restoration of our flag pole which was originally installed in 1964. Dara went to work grinding the layers of existing paint and rust down to bare steel, refurbishing the finial ball, refinishing the pole with a durable coating, replacing the halyards, raising a new flag and installing solar lighting to light up the flag at night.
Recognizing the close ties that our community has with the cemetery in July Dara started her work on the Information Center. In the Information Center she replaced broken glass, completed repairs to all of the window boxes and installed a new large window box which now features a large map illustrating the layout of the entire cemetery, sections and street names. The window boxes are now include displays to educate visitors of the history of the cemetery, notable citizens that are interned, explanations of common symbols found on tombstones and information related to the three historical markers found in our cemetery.
In January of 2022 Dara wrapped up her project by hosting a cleanup day at the cemetery and provided a tour of the historic section of the cemetery to teach younger Girl Scouts of our history. Dara also completed an update of our website to bring all burial up to date.
Thanks again Dara for all of your efforts.
